Closing Apple Standing Rings And Coloring FitBit Dots: Minimum Effort Required

The rings. The one ring. The three rings that show up on your Apple Watch. Or, if you are a Fitbit user, then the dots that you color in.

Why do we do this? For some, it is a new shiny bell and whistle to play with. For others, it helps you reach particular health goals.

Research tells us that standing and moving more is better for our short- and long-term health. Believe me, Iโ€™ve written plenty about it by now. If not, pause. Type sitting in the search bar and off you go.

Minimum Effort Required

You see, our devices use accelerometers to detect our motion and physical activity. To close your ring or color in a dot every hour, the device detects a minimum amount of activity.

Apple gives you credit for moving for at least one minute per hour. Fitbit gives you credit for taking 200 steps per hours.

This is the minimum effort required.

To just do the minimum, you need to move for 12 minutes in 12 hours or take 2400 steps in 12 hours.

Not much, huh?
