ABA in Health and Fitness Book Chapter: Coming Soon

It’s been almost two years since I was humbly offered to write a book chapter on health and fitness.

Boy, what a journey! This was my first academic book chapter that allowed me to combine my research and coaching experience in one comprehensive chapter.

From the initial invite in April 2023, to the first draft, to three heavy revisions and a final abstract that I submitted in January 2025. I knew it that it would take some time, but I appreciate the grind that my editors went through.

My book chapter is titled, “Health and Fitness” which is featured in a two volume textbook featuring specialty areas of applied behavior analysis (ABA). In this chapter, I walk behavioral practitioners through a practical way to use ABA in the realm of health and fitness behavior change.

My chapter is but one speciality application of the science which includes other areas as organizational behavior management, behavioral pharmacology, data science, applied animal behavior, sports psychology and education to name a few.

I wanted to write the chapter that I wish that I had when I began my journey in studying physical activity, exercise, and behavior change.

Here is the abstract from this chapter:

“Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a comprehensive framework that can promote meaningful health and fitness behavior change. This chapter applies behavioral concepts and principles to health and fitness, including assessment, measurement, intervention selection, practitioner competency and training, and ethics. While ABA can be applied to a range of pro-health behaviors, this chapter focuses on physical activity, exercise routines, nutrition, and reducing sedentary behavior. Real-world examples and case studies will be used to demonstrate how ABA can help clients acquire and maintain their health goals. By leveraging behavioral science, practitioners can facilitate lasting healthy lifestyles with their clients.”

I am excited to see the reach of this textbook in graduate programs and beyond.

Stay tuned for updates on this blog and elsewhere where you follow my work.
