When targeting health or fitness behaviors, they are many variables to consider.
Following any assessment, you should be ready to define, measure, and intervene upon any health and fitness behaviors
In my new BehaviorFit academy course, Measurement 101, I cover 4 lessons integral to measuring any behavior.
4 Lessons When Targeting Health and Fitness Behaviors
Lesson #1 What to consider as a coach before any measurement begins
Where are you heading with the measure?
Is there a WHY?
Do you or your client have clear align on how personal values relate to this measure?
There is often much homework completed prior to measures developed in the first place.
Lesson #2 Align BEHAVIORS and RESULTS
It is nice to know what behavior you want to target. It is also nice to know what your outcome, or result, will be.
However, there will be times when the behavior does not align with the result.
Lesson #3 Measurement is based on behavioral dimensions
Any sound, objective measure relies on clear and concise definitions. In behavior analysis, precise definitions follow how behavior occurs over time.
For most health and fitness behaviors, we often to know one of the following:
- temporal extent (duration),
- temporal locus (when in time),
- the repeatability of a behavior, and
- response magnitude (the force or intensity)
Lesson #4 Multiple Examples of health and fitness behaviors
Following lesson 3, I outline a variety of health and fitness behaviors based on those observable dimensions. Across various categories – physical activity, exercise, nutrition, and sleep – I guide you how to measure within each dimension
