Why different colored weights at the gym? Because of a behavioral principle called STIMULUS CONTROL!
Defined.
Stimulus Control = the process by which stimuli (colors) are associated with different outcomes (weights) in the environments (the gym). This principle is important because it guides our current behaviors to make the best choice.
Most bumper plates follow this color convention:
- Red = 55lbs / 25 kg
- Blue = 45 lbs / 20 kg
- Yellow = 35 lbs / 15 kg
- Green = 25 lbs / 10 kg
- Black = Everything
In our early days of lifting, we quickly learn which colors signal which weights. When we need to put 45’s on the bar, we know to head for the blue stack.
But this doesn’t last forever. You may get frustrated when new or different equipment do NOT follow these color conventions. Frustrating, am I right? Are the reds 25? And the greens 45? Yuck! I need 10’s, where do I go? Now I have to do color math in addition to kg math.?!?! Anybody been there?
Not Just Colors
Plate thickness and stack location are variables that contribute to stimulus control. You know the “thick blue ones over there…” are always going to be 45’s….and when they are not….
way to slow up class, Nick!
