Analyzing Fitness and Heart Rate following a positive COVID-19 test

Following a postive COVID-19 test, I immediately felt the effects on my fitness performance. As any good scientist would do, I looked back at my data to discern any trends and gather a basic understanding of anything going on.

(Before I review my findings, I’m thankful I’ve only had minor symptoms, my heart goes out to those suffering and going through severe illness)

About the Data

  • First, these data are taken from my Apple Watch (series 2) heart rate data.
  • Second, each data point represents the max beats per minute for that workout day.
  • Third, I tested positive on 1/18/21
  • Fourth, I maintain consistent intensity and am fairly competitive with myself and others in my CrossFit training.
  • Fifth, I have had a consistent fitness routine for 6+ years.

The Analysis

  1. Max heart rate averaged around 182 pre-positive test
  2. Max heart rate averaged closer to 187 post-positive test
  3. The average is gradually increasing post-positive.
  4. The major spike (210) on 2/3 forced me to look at the data
  5. There is greater variability in the range of heart rate data (170-210)

Actions that I will take moving forward

  • Continue monitoring these data
  • Scale load, repetitions, and movement levels to keep heart rate below 190
  • I will monitor my heart rate more often during the workout.
  • If heart rate spikes during the workout, I will force a long rest…. this will be hard to do because I like to push the intensity; gotta stay smart here.

Does this analysis help you think about your training post-positive or not?
